The National Association of Black Geoscientists, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, was founded in 1981 with the purpose of building community – enabling Black Geoscientists to connect, communicate, and network with other minority professionals.
Since then, the organization has evolved into a hub that attracts geoscientists from diverse fields, offering them opportunities to partake in career and educational endeavors, present cutting-edge research, build connections, advance professionally, and provide mentorship to aspiring Black Geoscientists.
Our Mission
The NABG was organized to:
- Inform students of career opportunities in the field of geosciences
- Encourage students to take advantage of funding opportunities
- Provide financial support to students pursuing degrees in the Geosciences
- Maintain metrics on Black Geoscience students as they matriculate through college and into the workforce
- Aid students in the search for employment
- Provide corporations and institutions with an academically talented and diverse group of students to fill internship, full-time, and research positions
- Facilitate the building of professional relationships within industry and between students and professionals
- Assist in the development of professional standards and practices of members within their geoscience careers and entrepreneurial pursuits
Our Success
- Becoming the first professional organization for Black Geoscientists, by Black Geoscientists
- Raising over $300,000 for scholarships through our annual fundraising banquet and other fundraising activities
- Visiting area high schools, colleges, universities, and churches with presentations and information pertaining to careers in geology and geophysics
- Holding workshops to introduce students to disciplines within the geosciences
- Holding an annual conference and monthly technical meetings for members, corporate members, and external supporters
- Partnering with the National Science Foundation to fund participation in our annual conference
- Becoming a member of society of the American Geological Institute (AGI), an affiliated society of AAPG (American Association of Petroleum Geologists) and associated society of the Geological Society of America (GSA), a member of the National Petroleum Council (NPC), a member of the Earth Day Network, and in partnership with DLESE (Digital Library for Earth Science Education)
